  • Provide office and clerical support for the Construction Division.
  • Serve as point of contact for customers by greeting walk-in traffic or answering multi-line telephone to provide information or direct caller/customers to the appropriate office or individual.
  • Receive, sort and distribute mail.
  • Photocopy documents and material as needed.
  • File correspondence.
  • Schedule meetings through Outlook calendar, gather information for agendas and prepare handouts or packet/folders.

Auto/Diesel Mechanic – District 1 – Seward, NE – $13.650/hourly

This vacancy is being advertised internally and externally and will close July 28, 2008.

Essential Duties:

·         Perform major engine overhauls using precision tools to completely rebuild gasoline and diesel engines. 

·         Overhaul transmissions and final drives, perform repairs and diagnostics of hydraulic systems and rewire electrical systems. 

·         Perform metal fabrications and major repairs on snowplows and trucks that may require extensive welding.

·         Disassemble units, inspect parts for wear, repair, overhaul and replace parts using precision measuring instruments.

·         Perform diagnosis and repair on equipment breakdowns in the field.  Inspect reassigned equipment to ensure that it is safe for operation by field personnel. 

·         Obtain bids for the parts needed to repair engines and purchase them. 

·         Maintain accurate computer and manual records of time and materials expended.

·         Perform preventative maintenance.

·         Manually provide highway traffic control for construction and maintenance projects according to safety procedures.

·         Physically move, load and unload highway materials and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds.

·         Operate tandem axel truck and other heavy equipment during highway emergency or snow removal operations.

·         May be required to operate a wrecker for vehicle recovery.

·         Must be available for emergency and maintenance operations statewide.

·         Perform building and yard maintenance. 

Requirements:

·         Must have practical work experience in the maintenance, repair and service procedures for gasoline and diesel equipment, the use of hand tools and the use of testing equipment. 

·         Must be able to diagnose, anticipate malfunctions and troubleshoot problems in gasoline and diesel powered equipment/vehicles from verbal descriptions to guide the repair work of others while in the shop or field. 

·         Must be able to lift 100 pounds.

·         Must possess a valid Class A with tanker endorsement Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 60 days of hire. 

·         Must be able to arrive at work in 40 minutes in regular conditions.

·         Regular and reliable attendance is required. 

Prefer:

·         Vocation technical school with at least five years of experience in the repair of trucks or heavy equipment desired.

Highway Maintenance Worker – District 1 – Wahoo, NE – $11.105/hourly

Successful applicants will be trained to operate various types of highway maintenance equipment including: dump trucks, semi-truck trailers, rollers, loaders, tractors, motorgraders, snowplows, draglines, backhoes, distributors and spreaders. Proficiency and certification in the operation of heavy highway maintenance equipment will result in eligibility for promotion to a Highway Maintenance Worker/Senior – $12.770/hourly.

Essential Duties:

·         Operate trucks and other light equipment to complete highway maintenance work.

·         Mow rights of way using hand and power mowers and tractors. 

·         Operate post drivers for the installation of signs, fences and guardrails.

·         Paint guardrails, posts, buildings and various structures. 

·         Perform manual labor for concrete and bituminous patching and sealing of cracks in highways and structures. 

·         Manually provide highway traffic control for construction and maintenance projects according to safety procedures. 

·         Physically move, load and unload highway materials and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds.

·         Complete routine and general maintenance and mechanical repair of equipment.

Requirements:

·         Must be 18 years of age and have a good driving record. 

·         Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, work in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high-speed traffic. 

·         A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsement is required within 60 days of employment.

·         Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes in normal driving conditions. 

·         Experience in heavy equipment operations.

Successful applicants will be trained to operate various types of highway maintenance equipment including: dump trucks, semi-truck trailers, rollers, loaders, tractors, motorgraders, snowplows, draglines, backhoes, distributors and spreaders. Proficiency and certification in the operation of heavy highway maintenance equipment will result in eligibility for promotion to a Highway Maintenance Worker/Senior – $12.770/hourly.

Engineer III – Roadway Design Division – Lincoln, NE – CENTRAL COMPLEX – Salary Grade 16

Essential Duties:

  • Serve as a design squad leader in an Interstate Design Unit and will directly supervise Highway Designer III’s.
  • Be responsible for designing complex highway projects and reviewing plans produced by others in the squad for completeness, accuracy and quality.
  • Coordinate highway projects with other divisions within the department and with public service agencies such as utilities, counties, cities, FHWA, etc.
  • Prepare for and attend plan-in-hand meetings, public hearings and pre-construction conferences.
  • Write and review special provisions, document decisions and keep correspondence files accurate and up‑to‑date, prepare and check project cost estimates.
  • Supervise and review the work of consultant engineers.
  • Responsible for training designers in squad and keeping squads informed of policy changes or standards modification.

Requirements:

  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Nebraska or be licensed in Nebraska within 90 days of employment.
  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Knowledgeable in MicroStation and GEOPAK computer systems or similar.

 Engineer III – Bridge Division – Lincoln NE – CENTRAL COMPLEX – $23.376/hourly

Essential Duties:

·         Research and document project development data to identify flood impacts, survey requirements and hydraulic information necessary to evaluate structures in floodplains.

·         Perform hydrologic analysis at bridge sites. Assemble and analyze hydrologic parameters to develop frequency distribution data that is used for defining bridge design requirements.

·         Hydraulically analyze floodplains to define structure size requirements, identify bridge design parameters, set road grades across the floodplains, assess environmental impacts and requirements for channel countermeasures.

·         Evaluate hydraulic alternates using risk assessment, value engineering, economic analysis and site inspection to determine the most practical structure design.

·         Field inspect structures to assess hydraulic adequacy, scour, floods, channel geomorphology, flood plain characteristics, maintenance requirements, wetland impacts and survey adequacy.

·         Prepare preliminary bridge data sheets and final box culvert data sheets that document design requirements.

·         Provide administration coordination, field inspection and quality assurance review for state/county bridge hydraulic projects done by consultants.

Requirements:

·         A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. Bachelor’s Degrees outside of the United States must be ABET accredited at the time of application.

·         Registered as a professional engineer in Nebraska within 90 days of hire.

·         Minimum of four years of experience.

·         A valid driver’s license.

·         Experience in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

·         Regular and reliable attendance is required.

  • Design horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, roadway cross‑sections and other design features.

  • Prepare preliminary and final construction project plans.

  • Participate in and document engineering decision, write special provisions and keep project correspondence files accurate and up‑to‑date.

  • Prepare for and participate in project meetings including plan‑in‑hand, public information, public hearing, pre-appraisal and pre-construction meetings.

  • Prepare for and participate in project field inspections.

  • Employment up to 2080 hours or four years, whichever comes first. If employed to 2080 hours, student must take 30 day break before returning to work.

Requirements:

Must be at least a three‑fourths time student majoring in engineering or related field and be able to work at least 12 hours a week when classes are in session, 16 hours a week preferred. Temporary full time employment may be available during breaks.

A second semester sophomore with experience in the use of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD). Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Engineer III – Bridge Division – Central Complex - Lincoln, NE – Salary Open

This position is being advertised internally and externally and will remain OPEN until filled.

Essential Duties: This position is in the Research and Load Rating Section.

·         Examine the plans, inspection reports and run computer software to determine the safe live load carrying capacity of several thousand public bridge structures in the sate of Nebraska.

·         Be required to meet a daily quota and although working in a team environment, will work independently.

·         Document and manage the findings in both hard copies and electronic formats.

Requirements:

·         Have a four year bachelor degree in Civil Engineering,

o        Bachelor’s degrees outside of the United States must be ABET accredited at the time of application

·         Be registered as a professional engineer in Nebraska or do so within six months from the date of hire. Applicant without professional license will be considered for Engineer I or Engineer II depending on experience.
