What they're saying...

LINCOLN - Working at the NDOR in Right of Way Design was great. Everyone was so helpful and happy to be working with you. The work environment was awesome. ~ Jarrod

HOLDREGE - My co-op employment at the Department of Roads in Holdrege was a very educational experience.  I learned a lot about the field of surveying. I enjoyed the people that I had to work with and felt that the crew chiefs of District 7 knew what they were doing. The overall work environment was great and they were eager to answer any questions that I had and helped me with anything that I didn't understand. ~ Dallas

LINCOLN - My co-op experience on geodetics survey crew at the NDOR was great.  I was able to learn and use new technology. I had experienced supervisors that knew what they were doing and could show me how to do the work. Overall I was able to learn a lot. ~Tyler

CHADRON - My co-op employment at the Department of Roads in Chadron allowed me to gain experience in many different aspects of highway construction. The people I worked with were very nice and helped me learn more about the career. ~Terry

LINCOLN - During my co-op I worked for the geodetics office.  I had a very good learning experience working with the GPS equipment and doing all the other trades of the job.  The people that I worked for were very nice to me and treated me like one of them. I feel that I came out of my co-op more informed about what my job would consist of when I graduate. ~ Jordan

SCOTTSBLUFF - My co-op assignment was for the Department of Roads at Scottsbluff in field construction. I gained valuable knowledge while working with great people. They gave me the opportunity to work on many different projects and gain experience in a variety of different job applications. ~ Jerremy

LINCOLN - Some of the great things about my student work study program included getting to apply  the things that I was learning in the classroom to real life. I think that working on projects helped me to better understand concepts taught in the classroom. It helped me become familiar with the Department of Roads, which led to my current position. It also provided me with a network of adult engineers outside of the University that could give advice, answer questions, etc.  ~ Niki

LINCOLN - The engineers I work with attempt to involve the student interns in all aspects of bridge design. I have had the opportunity to learn MicroStation and greatly refined my skills on Excel, and certainly developed a much keener eye for evaluating a blueprint. The work has been challenging and enjoyable, and the people who work here are committed to making this job an educational opportunity. My schoolwork seems far more relevant after the exposure I’ve had to civil engineering at the NDOR.   Road building encompasses many aspects of civil engineering and everyone I have met at the NDOR has shown true generosity with sharing their expertise. Until this I never realized how interesting it could be inside a cubicle. I would recommend this experience to any student of civil engineering. ~ Kent

LINCOLN - I feel that the work study program that I am in is a great opportunity. During my short time here, everybody has been very helpful and patient in teaching me not only how to do my job, but how to do it correctly.  I also like the fact that there are other student in the area that I can relate to and learn from as well. I think that the experience that I get from here will help me not only in the near future, but for years to come. ~ Jesse

LINCOLN - Being a student work-study with the Department of Roads has been very beneficial to me. While working in the Expressway Design Unit of Roadway Design Division, I have been responsible for many tasks, including the design of roadway features, working with cross sections, culverts, storm sewers, as well as assisting with calculations and other engineer related work. Being exposed to these types of things at work has also had a positive effect in my classes, because having worked on something before seeing it in class helps me to better understand it. The opposite is also true, as I have used numerous things that I learned in school while at work.  My favorite aspect of the work-study program is the ease of scheduling.  It is really easy for me to fit work into my class schedule, and they are very lenient with conflicts. Overall, it has been and continues to be a very informative, beneficial and flexible place to work. ~ Korey

LINCOLN - The Work Study Program provides great opportunities in many different aspects. The idea of working in your field of interest before completing a degree can be invaluable. The knowledge learned by working can help guide students to specific areas that interest them most. The program also allows students to apply classroom knowledge in the work place. The Work Study Program is also beneficial in respect to networking with people. At the Department of Roads you will meet and work with professionals within your field of study. ~ Cameron

LINCOLN - My employment at NDOR through the Work Study program has been great. The work environment is very student friendly and offers flexible hours. I have learned valuable skills as a draftsman as well as working closely with engineers. It has provided me with priceless knowledge and practical application in the engineering field. ~ Mark

LINCOLN - My experience as a student work-study has been invaluable to my construction future by providing me with an insider's perspective in the heavy construction industry. The training I have received and the people I have meet is second to none. The lessons learned in the field bring depth to the lessons learned in the classroom.  Because of this, it was easier to see the relativism and comprehend the classroom topics, and to even add comments of previous experiences to the lectures sets one above the rest. The time spent in the classroom has aided in the performance of my NDOR duties ranging from safety and human resource management, to material performance and testing, to structural design. Upon graduation, this experience will set me above the rest of my colleagues that have little to no field experience and make me more attractive to industry recruiters, and overall a better, well-rounded person. ~ Neal
